Kshetram- avoidable Movie

Rating : 0.5/5
Director : T Venu Gopal
Producer : G Govindarajulu
Music Director : Koti
Starring: Jagapathi Babu, Priyamani, Kick Shyam, Aditya Menon, Kota Srinivasa Rao

Priyamani and Jagapthi Babu are the principal leads in the movie along with ‘Kick’ Shyam. The movie has been directed by T.Venu Gopal and Govinda Rajulu is the producer. The movie has hit the screens today. Let us see how the film is.

Story :

The ‘story’ of this film revolves around a powerful village leader Narasimha Rayalu ( Jagapathi Babu ) and his wife Lakshmi ( Priyamani). Narasimha Rayalu changes his name to Naga Penchalayya in order to complete an ancient ritual that is critical to the well being of his village. He is stopped in his attempts by his own Chinnanna ( Kota Srinivasa Rao) and his cousin Viswanadha Rayulu (Adithya Menon). The ritual remains incomplete and the movie shifts to the present day.

Chakri( Kick Shyam) is the son of Viswanadha Rayulu and he falls in love with Sohini (Priyamani), who is eerily similar to Lakshmi. When Sohini comes into the ancestral house of Chakri, strange supernatural events happen and powerful spirits and athmas come into the picture. What happens to Sohini? Will the ritual be completed? That is the story.

Plus Points :

Priyamani is the sole saving grace of the movie. She tries her best to shoulder the film but there is only so much she can do in this case. She is a brilliant actor and you can see why in the second half of this movie. It is so sad to see such a talented performer being wasted in films like these.

Tanikella Bharani is okay as the Achari. Adithya Menon is decent in the role allotted to him. Kota Srinivasa Rao is okay and he has done the maximum he could do in the role sketched out for him.

Minus Points :

Jagapathi Babu is a very fine actor and he should stop accepting atrocious roles like the one in this film. He appears very uncomfortable while trying to come up with a ‘powerful’ performance. He is also let down by a poor characterization and silly dialogues. ‘Kick’ Shyam has no clue as to what is going on around him and he has been wasted in this film.

Brahmanandam’s role is a major disappointment and looks silly. Hema and Surekha Vani are wasted in extremely poor roles. Brahmaji is another wonderfully talented artiste who is wasted time and again by filmmakers. His role in this movie is forgettable. Same goes for Rajiv Kanakala. There are many other artistes who just flash for a minute and then disappear completely.

The movie has borrowed heavily from films like Arundhati and Chandramukhi. Etching of the characters and many scenes in the film will remind you of this fact. Direction is extremely poor and story has colossal holes in its plot. There are many highly illogical scenes in the film. For example, Jagapathi Babu changes his name to Penchalayya officially and the next minute, people around him break out into a song praising him in his old name.

Technical Aspects :

Screenplay is very bad. Editing is extremely jerky and is a major minus. Cinematography is average and special effects are ok. Music is very poor and none of the songs are worth remembering. Background score is a disaster.

Dialogues are a major minus and outdated. They would have been out of place even in Telugu movies of the 1980′s.

Verdict :

Kshetram is a bad khichdi of Arundhati and Chandramukhi. It is so bad that it is a disgrace to even mention those classics in the same sentence with this movie. A better director would have been able to make the movie work atleast in B and C Centers. Kshetram has absolutely nothing to offer movie lovers. This is an avoidable flick.

Rajanna Review

Rating: 2.75/5

It is

Another case of a Telugu film driving the plot through today’s set of cliches (formula) to make up for lack of content and the talent to realise a decent thing on screen.

Plot

Amidst tall grasses are the gasps a mother (Sneha) holding on to her just born. The dora and his henchmen get to her eventually, but, by then the little girl is set afloat to be found later by a local fisherman.

Years pass and the little girl (Mallamma played by Eney) seems to have a natural inclination to songs. Set in the zamandari age (the fifties), Mallamma isn’t allowed to pursue her dreams and the little singing she does around the village gets her into trouble. The landlord (aka dorasani played by Shweta Menon) has a hunch that the girl could be Rajanna’s daughter and tries to kill her. After escaping from the village she sets out to Delhi on foot to meet the Prime Minister and save her village.

Her father and his patriotic heroics (with the sword and the drum) is the film’s flashback.

What’s boring?

The film’s got a dull narrative and a subnormal cast to further bore you. The first half is just a blur of poorly written scenes, bad production design and a boring build up to the scenes which they thought were gonna win the audience in the second half.

Thinking back, I can hardly recollect a single moment from the tiresome first half (even though it is only one hour in duration).

What backfired?

Vijayendra Prasad who usually provides his son with the story has taken this also through a familiar pattern. But, the epic action episodes which they usually bank their money against have failed to impress.

The initial rebellion of the villagers is the only episode which had a few good moments (even technique wise).

Actors

Nagarjuna doesn’t give us anything worthy of the character he is supposed to represent. But, with the given quality of scenes and dialogue, it is hard for anyone to shine.

Eney, who takes up most of the screen time had no other option, but, to succumb to the director’s terrible vision of how kids behave. This cruelty towards kids is not new, but, bugs you all the more with the central character being one.

Telangana Sakuntala with her little cameo is the only one that’ll let you forget about bad acting for a while.

Sneha had done her part without much trouble.

Verdict

The film in its substandard essence might take you back to the 2005 epic dud Subash Chandra Bose.

CNN-IBN-LIVE Telugu Review: 'Panjaa' is a must watch

Cast: Pawan Kalyan, Sarah Jane Dias, Anjali Lavania, Jackie Shroff, Adivi Sesh, Thanikella Bharani, Brahmanandam

Director: Vishnuvardhan

Pawan Kalyan always tries to be different. At the beginning of his career, he was seen as style icon, but later he moved away from formula films and started focusing on out-of-the-box ideas. His huge fan following may not like him to experiment, but Pawan Kalyan is what he is. His films carry style with less space for regular commercial ingredients.
Pawan Kalyan, Sarah-Jane Dias in Telugu film 'Panjaa'
IBNLive

In 'Panjaa', Pawal Kalyan sports a new look - he is seen with a beard. His looks apart, the film's strength is the stylish narration by director Vishnuvardhan, known for top class stylish Tamil films like 'Billa' and 'Pattiyal'.

This is Vishnuvardhan's first Telugu film and it does reflects his signature style. Like his Tamil film 'Billa', Vishnuvardhan ensures a great level of technical finesse in 'Panjaa'. Every sequence is as stylish as it can get.

Vinod's cinematography and Yuvan Shankar Raja's composition are impressive. But is is a Pawan Kalyan film all the way - his elegance, dialogue delivery and action sequences are a treat to watch. And the way he performs in the 'Papa Raayudu' song with Brahmanandam is amazing. In fact, it one of the many high points of the film.

On the flip side, the film moves at a slower pace in many sequences. The story is not fresh and the screenplay is old too. The placement of the title song, which is so popular, is shown after the film gets over.

Pawan plays Jai, who works for a don Bhagwan, who is from Kolkotta. Bhagwan has a standing enmity with Kulkarni, another don, but Jai protects his master like a rock.

With his astute moves Jai has been able to mastermind attacks on the opponents.

Bar dancer Jahnavi, who is in Bhagwan's group, likes Jai, while Bhagwan's son Munna, known for his atrocities, eyes her too.

But Jai likes Sandhya, a shy girl who loves nature.

Munna kills Jahnavi and it outrages Jai who kills Munna. This creates a rift between him and his boss, Bhagwan. Meanwhile the Kulkarni gang seeks revenge on Jai who takes refuge in his girlfriend' house.

Later Jai takes on the gangsters singlehandedly and eliminates all of them.

Pawal Kalyan is stylish as a performer and makes an impact with his new looks and performance. Even after 15 years, Pawan remains a style icon.

Sarah Jane Dias scores with a good performance, while Anjali does skin show. Adivi Shesh makes a good impact as an antagonist.

Jackie Shroff and Atul Kulkarni too have done well in their respective roles which have limited scope. Brahmanandam and Ali provides comedy.

The film has good art work and styling too.

Over all 'Panjaa' is a well made film, but its weakest point is the slow narration.

Panjaa is one of the Best of Pawan Kalyan’s films

Pawan Kalyan’s star power needs no introduction and for more than ten years, he has been trying his best to do everything to enthrall his fans. I am certainly not one among them and I have no qualms accepting this fact. Except for Jalsa, I can’t think of a single film that I liked from his filmography since Thammudu (I didn’t like Khushi for some reason). Yet, the moment I stepped out of Panjaa, I knew that I had liked the film for what it was. Maybe it did help that I was expecting a film about Jai (not Powerstar Pawan Kalyan) set in a mafia backdrop. It certainly made a whole lot of difference compared to so many other viewers and critics who seem to know exactly what a Powerstar’s film should contain.

Everyone expects films to be entertaining and that’s fair because it’s the order of the day. Action entertainers are in vogue but to expect every film to be entertaining (read as packed with action, comedy, romance and emotion) is one of the tragedies of the current trend. Maybe that’s where Panjaa stands apart or for those who didn’t like the film, fails. Directed by Vishnu Vardhan, the film has Pawan Kalyan, Sarah Jane Dias, Anjali Lavania, Jackie Shroff, Adivi Shesh, Thanikella Bharani, Atul Kulkarni, Ali and Brahmanandam in lead roles.

Pawan Kalyan plays Jai, a close aide of a mafia don Bhagwan (Jackie Shroff). Vishnu Vardhan takes us right into the story and leaves it us to guess how powerful Bhagwan is. The opening scene shot on Atul Kulkarni introducing Jai as Bhagwan’s shadow is a clever scene to establish the lead character. Twenty minutes later, it becomes clear that Vishnu Vardhan had brought in his own style into the film’s narration and it’s not the usual Pawan Kalyan’s film which his fans have got used to for more than a decade. What I really really loved about the film is Vishnu Vardhan manages to keep Pawan Kalyan as Jai throughout the film. I can’t think of any other director in the past ten years who has been able to do that. For once, it was refreshing to see that the film gives more importance to lot more characters rather than stick to one character.

Jai believes in loyalty towards the man who stood by him in his darkest hour and he vows to do anything to protect him. Although he kills people, he’s not entirely a bad person. We come to know that since he missed a lot of things in his childhood, he spends a lot of time in a nursery. It makes him happy, even though it’s only for a little while. He yearns to be a good man, although his loyalty towards Bhagwan often brings him back to the dark side of his life. This is the story of a man who’s torn by what’s happening in his heart.

When Jai falls in love with Sandhya (Sarah Jane Dias), it helps him to take his mind off the clean up act he usually does for Bhagwan. He likes spending time with her and soon realizes that he’s in love with her. In turn, Sandhya likes his company although she doesn’t realize until much later that she’s in love with him. After a while, he only cares about three people – Chotu (Ali), Sandhya and Jhanavi (Anjali Lavania) because they remind him of the other side of life. The good and happy side of life. No wonder, when two of them are killed, he’s blinded by mad rage and vows to avenge their deaths. Bad things happen when the entire story is about people who are morally corrupt. We are told that power matters the most in mafia business and people can go to any length to have power.

One of my favourite scenes in the film comes in the second half. Jai removes his shoes and runs for a while in the hills near Sandhya’s (Sarah Jane Dias) house. He tells her that it reminded him of his childhood when he used to fly kites. Being with her at that moment means the world to him and he ends up confessing everything about his life to let go the burden of holding a secret for too long. In those five minutes, the whole crux of Jai’s characterization becomes clear.

Panjaa is a well-written tale about people who would do anything for their love, respect and power. The ‘so-called’ weak storyline has one of the best three-act structures I have seen in recent times. The characters are introduced, a lot of things go wrong in the middle of the journey and finally the protagonist has his revenge. Of course, it evokes a déjà vu in terms of how the story is narrated because of the choices Vishnu Vardhan makes right in the beginning of the film. Maybe only he can answer why he chose to narrate a story where the story progresses exactly how it should throughout the film. Mind you, there’s nothing sophisticated about the film’s central conflict. If someone tells you that there’s no ‘conflict’ in the film, then that person might have been watching the wrong film. This film is a story about one man’s internal conflict as much as it is about his conflict with the antagonists.

Pawan Kalyan excels in his role. Yes, he doesn’t show-off his full potential and energy in this film, but considering that he did exactly what he must for the role, his performance stands out. At no point of time, does the Powerstar dominate Jai and that was quite refreshing to see. The film’s other stand out performance comes from Adivi Sesh, who plays Munna. His characterization bears striking resemblance to Sundeep Kishan’s role in Deva Katta’s Prasthanam and Sesh has done an amazing job as the badass guy who fucks up a whole lot of things due to his impulsive nature. Bhagwan (Jackie Shroff) loves his son, Munna (Adivi Sesh) way too much and it’s completely justified that he wants to kill Jai, despite the latter being his most trusted aide for twenty years. Thanikella Bharani and Atul Kulkarni have decent roles and they deliver credible performances.

There’s a reason why the onscreen chemistry between Sandhya (Sarah Jane Dias) and Jai (Pawan Kalyan) lacks the zing which you normally expect. Jai is a mafia guy and to expect him to be like a 20-something whose hormones are on full throttle is a bit too much to ask for. The romance is subtle and it remains so for most part of the film. Anjali Lavania plays a club dancer who’s in love with Jai and she’s alright in her role. Ali and Brahmanandam have limited screen time and you can’t blame them for not bringing the house down with their antics.

Shot mostly in Kolkata, the film’s cinematography is another stand out feature. Call it slick or stylish, PS Vinod leaves a distinct mark with his cinematography. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music is good and it’s still surprising why most of the songs were kept as bit numbers in the final edit. And kudos to Vishnu Vardhan! To have one of the biggest stars in Telugu cinema as the protagonist and making him stay within the character is quite an achievement. It’s true that the film’s best portions come in the first half and most part of the second half revolves around Pawan Kalyan and Brahmanandam, but there was hardly a moment where the story and narration seemed awkward. Right after the interval bang, you can imagine how the story would unfold and except for couple of twists, the proceedings go as you would have predicted.

Panjaa is not an extra-ordinary film but it has enough substance to appreciate the finer nuances. All you need is a little patience and an open mind to realize that it’s not a ‘laugh-out-loud’ entertainer. Words like a ‘sensible film’, ‘riveting action drama’ seem too alien but Panjaa is exactly that sort of film. And come on, you can’t complain about the ‘violence’ in the film. It’s a film about people who kill each other at the drop of hat for heaven’s sake!

P.S : Since a lot of you have already concluded that there’s ‘nothing’ in the film, good luck with ‘Gabbar Singh’. I sincerely hope that you find ‘a lot’ of things in that film to rave about.

Pawan Kalyan is back with Panjaa

The long wait is over. Power Star Pawan Kalyan who is desperately waiting to register a hit is back with Panjaa. The performance of Pawan is fantastic and his energy level in the movie reminds us movies like Thammudu and Badri. His dances too improved a lot and especially in songs Paparayudu and Panjaa title song he enthralls the audience with his steps.

The movie is carrying positive report from all quarters of people and have very good chances to become a hit at box-office. The film opened to huge crowds and the count in overseas is very high than recent Telugu movies. Above all, this movie has brought the smiles from the fans of the actor after many days. We have to wait and see how much impact Panjaa creates at box-office.

A big relief for Pawan Kalyan

Powerstar Pawan Kalyan's latest outing Panjaa has set the cash registers ringing at the Box Office, despite the initial negative talk. As per the trade reports, the opening weakend collections has been phenomenal.
However, the makers of Panjaa were reluctant to reveal the revenue Panjaa has generated.
"We have seen in the recent past that the statements about the collections have created controversies. We don't want to create any rifts. Powerstar is against such things. Everyone knows the stamina of Pawan Kalyan and the buyers will recover the costs very soon. We are very happy about the National Media appreciation," said the makers of Panjaa.

Acclaimed directors Rajamouli and Krish who attended the screening of Panjaa recently,

"Panjaa is a must watch. It is a Pawan Kalyan film all the way - his elegance, dialogue delivery and action sequences are a treat to watch," IBN Review.
"Telugu film Panjaa packs a solid punch in its opening weekend in the US," said Taran Adarsh, Bollywood trade analyst.

Rahul Review: 4.5/5
—————————————————————————————————————————————

Powerstar Pawan Kalyan is back with his next and much hyped movie this year with "Panjaa". Stylish Director Vishnu Vardhan directing the flick and Yuvan Shanker gave some rocking numbers in the audio. The way Vedam Producers Arka Media and New Production house Sangamitra arts planned their publicity made the movie reach peak level of expectations. Even the censor talk is pretty positive about the movie.

—————————————————————————————————————————————

Jai (Pawan Kalyan) a truehearted auxiliary in the Bhagwan (Jackie Shroff) gang and his competitor gang owned by Kulakarni (Atul Kulakarni) who always tries to dominate him. Munna (Adivi Seshu) a spoilt brat son of Bhagwan. Who falls behind Jahnavi (Anjali Lavania) a bar dancer in Kolkata. But Anjali likes Jai usually stays with Jai to skip the Sadistic Munna. Interim Jai falls in Love with Sandhya (Sarah Jane Dias). What are Munna reactions when he gets to know about Jai and Jahnavi? What makes Pawan go against Bhagwan? Is rest of the storyline.

—————————————————————————————————————————————

It’s Powerstar Pawan Kalyan all the way. It’s a treat to see him in a Brilliant mood. Be its Fights, Comedy, Dances or the Emotional scenes he just lived in the characters he played in Panjaa. Especially his mind blowing Dances in Paparayudu and Panjaa title song are marvelous.Anjali Lavania adds much needed spice to the movie, she was looking redhot in “Veyyi ra” song. Sarah Jane Dias looks Cute and she came up with applaud able performance. Adivi Seshu is perfect. Jackie Shroff is Adequate in the negative shade. Atul Kulakarni & Tanikella Bharani are Good. Bhramanandam is used effectively for entertaining episodes in the second half, Especially the way Bhrami showed his mannerism in Papparayudu is just Fabulous. Ali and Subbaraju were did their part Best. Remaining cast was alright.

Vishnu Vardhan is known for his technically brilliant direction. He tried something different with some emotional content and stylish episodes in Panjaa. His taking is trendy and Stylish. Screenplay by Rahul Koda is not binding enough to blend both the shades of the lead character. Editing by A Sreekar Prasad could have been crispier. Art Work by Sunil Babu attracting. Dialogues by Ravi Abburi were good in parts could have been lot better. I loved these lines specially

1.Pagga ela untundo vadiki telusu, ela teruchukovali naku telusu..
2.Nuvu Kotte oka oka debba ku oka oka Chettu prathekaram theruchukuntundi
3.Nenu cheppalsina avasaram unappudu meru addagalsina avasaram ledu Bhagwan!!
4.Sayam pondhinavadu kruthagnyatha chupinchaka povadam entha Thappo, Sayam chesinavadu Kyuthagnyatha korukodam kuda anthe thappu

Production Values by Sangamithra Arts and Arka Media are Grand.

Yuvan Shanker Raja Music is another assets of the film. The songs as well as the background music are equally good.

“Veyyi Ra” first song in movie where Anjali Lavania looks Red Hot. Though song was liked by many but the way they shot the song makes it Tollywood version of Sheela Ki Jawani ;)
“Kshenam Kshenam” track is nice. Vishnuvardhan Taking and Ps Vinod cinematography makes it visually rocking.
“Yela Yela” track is fabulous. One of the best shot Pawan Kalyan’s duet.. “i wanna Hug you” choreographer for the way he choreographed the song.
“Papparayudu” track is fabulous. Pawan steps and Bhrami Mannerisms are the main assets of the track. Choreographer must be applauded for the song. I don’t mind saying it’s the best song choreographed on Pawan Kalyan’s career.
Panjaa title track is good. The way it starts is just rocking keeps audience momentum going till the END But this should have been placed in the beginning.

—————————————————————————————————————————————

Panjaa First half is good, But the pace in second half goes extraordinary. Positives of Panjaa are Pawan Kalyan, Songs, Cinematography, Choreography, Stylish taking, Anjali Lavania Oomph factor , exciting Thrills. On the flipside lags inbetween, thin Storyline, Editing, are the major drawbacks. Overall, Panjaa is the movie which Pawan Kalyan fans were waiting to see from a long time and for the regular audience its an Decent stylish entertainer which is worth waching for Pawan Kalyan.

Final Verdit :

1.Watch the movie like a Movie and Don't compare the movie with any movies.
2.Fans will enjoy a lot But anti-fans cannot digest the movie progress.

PANJAA CENSOR CUTS EXCLUSIVE FOR ALL FANS

Exclusive Interview : Panjaa’s Villain – Adavi Sesh

Adivi Sesh is the guy who is going to portray the role of Munna, a key negative character in Power Star Pawan Kalyan’s ‘Panjaa’. He is a versatile and talented guy who made his debut in Telugu with ‘Karma’, a critically acclaimed movie. We caught up with the actor for an exclusive chitchat. Here is that transcript for you folks. Enjoy

Q) Did you always want to get into films?
A) Well you can say that. We come from a family of artistes and fine art lovers. For me, movies are the best way to take your art to the masses. I took up some film making courses while in the US and I need to go back one day to complete some of them.

Q) What character are you playing in Panjaa?
A) I am playing the role of Munna, one of the principal negative characters in the movie. My character will be quite interesting for you all to watch. I have quite a number of scenes with Pawan Kalyan garu, Jackie Shroff and Anjali Lavania. My character has been moulded very well by director Vishnuvardhan garu.

Q) You are an NRI and you made your debut as a hero. How did you end up playing a negative role in Panjaa?
A) After my debut film, I got some offers to play the role of a romantic hero. But I did not take them up as none of them excited me. I am always on the lookout for freshness and novelty and I want to be remembered as a versatile and honest actor. So when I was looking out for roles, I got a call from Neelima’s (Producer) office and the script was narrated to me there. Apparently, director Vishnuvardhan saw my film Karma and he wanted me in the role of Munna. I immediately accepted, as I felt that this was the chance of a lifetime.

Q) How was it working with Pawan Kalyan?
A) I was very nervous initially but it lasted just for a day. I realised what an amazing human being Pawan Kalyan is. He is very honest, very candid and I like that. He does not have the airs of a popular star. He is so simple and down to earth. We bonded well on the sets and I cherished every moment of my association with the movie.

Q) Panjaa has the appearance of a very stylish and class film. Do you think it would appeal to the common man?
A) Absolutely! Pawan Kalyan is an actor who has a tremendous following in all sections of the society. Whether its a C center crowd or an A center crowd, what they look for is entertainment. They have different expectations from the movie and when the expectations are met, it doesnt matter whether the movie is a class movie or a mass movie. My dad, who is the US, enjoys the so called mass movies as much as someone in a C center.

Q) Was it tough working with director Vishnuvardhan?
A) No. He was a very demanding but it was never tough. He knew absolutely what he wanted. He is a very talented and knowledgeable director and you will see what a wonderful product he has come up with.

Q) Will you take up negative characters in future?
A) Basically, I look for the way in which the character has been moulded in the script. If it is key to the story and if it excites me, I will do it. The length of a character is not important. It is the value it brings to the story that is crucial.

Q) What are your future projects?
A) Well, I will be directing a film very shortly. It is a heist drama and a major production house has agreed to produce the movie. I am still finalizing the script and we will make an announcement once it is done. It is a script which has a lot of potential for entertainment as well as nativity. I will also be working with my brother for a new film which he will direct.

Q) Do you plan to settle down here?
A) Well, I will be here for a very long time. I did not have too many friends in the early stages as I didnt know anyone here. But I am slowly getting to know people here. I also want to make a lot of good movies. So yes, I will be here.

Q) Who are your favourite actors from the industry?
A) I am absolutely crazy about Pawan Kalyan. I grew up watching his movies and it is so exciting to share screen space with him. I love Mahesh Babu for the way he acts and for his comedy timing.

Q)Any message you want to give about Panjaa?
A) Its a good honest movie that will entertain you and make you happy. The film has been made with very high technical values and the cinematographer has done a fabulous job. You will see new and innovative camera angles in the movie. Each and every frame will appear very fresh. I am sure the public will love it.

We hope so too and with that, we ended the interview. Sesh is anxious to catch the movie on Friday and bask in its glory. Let us wish him the very best.
